Perhaps Another Day

I went for a walk along the beach.
There in the sand
I saw such a lovely but tarnished old lamp.
I wondered, what could it be?

I thought it would be pretty
If I could make it shine.
So I rubbed the lamp with my sleeve
Until it was clean.

I could not believe my eyes!
It was a magic lamp.
And a genie appeared to me,
Ready to do my bidding.

The genie was ready and raring to go.
Ready to seduce me with all kinds of treasures.
Knowing just what it takes to buy your soul,
He had the resources, but I had the will to say no.

He started with the old standby's,
Offering me silver and gold.
Then came the diamonds,
The rubies and emeralds.

But I said that can wait until later...
          Perhaps another day.
But for now... Just give me...
          A moment soft and tender.

Then he offered me great power,
I could be ruler of the world.
Men would tremble at the thought of me.
Women would throw themselves at my feet.

But I said that can wait until later...
          Perhaps another day.
But for now... Just give me...
          A moment soft and tender.

Then he suggested I would be happy
As the wisest man ever born.
I could solve all the world's problems.
I would be famous and everyone would admire me.

But I said that can wait until later...
          Perhaps another day.
But for now... Just give me...
          A moment soft and tender.

The genie saved the greatest test until last.
He wanted to give me the power
To seek vengeance on all those who ever harmed me.
But I have no interest in beds of nails or crocodile pits.

But I said that can wait until later...
          Perhaps another day.
But for now... Just give me...
          A moment soft and tender.

This moment is my hope and prayer for each and every one of you -- especially for those of you who can't yet believe this moment will ever come for you.
