Feel The Heat!

Christians are sometimes stereotyped as people who never have any fun. They are too worried about breaking the rules to have a good time. And they are too serious, always working hard for the church. Unbelievers taunt Christians to make them feel unaccepted for being so straight laced. Unbelievers try to entice and lure Christians into thinking sinning is harmless. And unbelievers tempt Christians by saying, "Oh, come on! Be spontaneous! Just do it!"

Can a Christian be spontaneous and still conform to the image of Christ? Yes! A Christian is sometimes slow to respond. That is because you can sometimes avoid costly mistakes by delaying a decision to study the situation before acting. But there are other times when there just is no time to "stop the clock" to weigh the pro's and con's. You have to act immediately. Or you will lose the opportunity.

And there are times when you wish to relax with your friends and just enjoy the fellowship of their company. Can you let your hair down and still please God? Can you be spontaneous without getting bogged down by rules and regulations? Yes!

If we think about what pleases God on a regular basis, we will be prepared to be spontaneous. When we study the Bible and pray every day, we can respond to everyday situations quickly and with minimal effort. It is not that we act or speak without thinking. We have done our thinking ahead of time by listening to God's Spirit and remembering His Word.

Sometimes we have to work hard to make things happen. But there are also times when we need to just sit back, put our feet up, relax, and let God take over the work. Webster defines spontaneous combustion as the process of catching fire as a result of heat generated by internal chemical action. Can the process of spontaneous combustion apply to our church? You had better believe it can!

Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in your life and in the lives of those around you. For the Holy Spirit initiates the spontaneous combustion in the hearts of men. The Holy Spirit generates the internal heat and starts the fire in the souls of men. So be spontaneous. Feel the heat! Catch the fire! Pray, and expect others to catch the fire, too!
